Montgomery Educator Summit:
History, Storytelling & Civic Action at the Legacy Sites

An educator summit that turns the landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement into lessons for the classroom.

As high school students engage with our nation’s history at the Montgomery Youth Summit this April, educators are invited to take part in a concurrent exploration and professional development summit of their own. By exploring historic sites alongside the Equal Justice Initiative’s powerful work, educators will experience landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement and develop practical skills and strategies for bringing the experience back to their classrooms. 

Conference Highlights

 

Over the course of three days, teachers will have an opportunity to: 

  • Discover EJI Legacy Sites, the Rosa Parks Museum, and the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church.
  • Travel to Birmingham and explore additional landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Engage with a member of the EJI team to learn more about their work.
  • Explore practical tools for building a civil discourse classroom, including deliberative discussion structures, strategies for holding difficult conversations, and approaches to using primary sources from the sites visited.
  • Make a personal commitment at the close of the summit—one concrete action they will take when they return home—and consider how to bring this experience to the students and communities they serve.

 

Conference Details

 

Dates: Wednesday, April 14, 2027-Friday, April 16, 2027 

*Schools attending with a cohort of students must arrive on Tuesday, April 13. 

Cost: The conference tuition is $1,865 and includes hotel accommodations, all sessions, presentations, and lunches. 

Conference & Hotel Location: The summit will take place at a hotel in Montgomery, Alabama. We plan to use the EJI sites and other landmarks as the central part of the experience. Students and faculty advisors will be housed at the same hotel.
