Civic Leaders

Shadow

Civic Leaders | June 24-28, 2024

Created in partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), Close Up presents Civic Leaders for rising eighth-graders and rising 10th-graders. Civic Leaders will provide exciting opportunities for students to improve civic and political knowledge and efficacy, practice critical skills, and meet Maryland College and Career Ready (MCCR) Standards.

Students will discuss the issues they care about and follow a curriculum that emphasizes building citizenship skills and democratic dispositions. Close Up instructors will facilitate the programs to help middle and high schoolers engage with their community and take part in persuasive writing and speaking activities about pressing current issues.

Congressional Simulation: In partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools, the Close Up Foundation is hosting a Congressional Simulation for PGCPS high school students. Held at the University of Maryland campus, the Congressional Simulation will give students the opportunity to engage with peers across the county on pressing current issues. Students will take on the role of members of the House of Representatives to deliberate real-world legislation, review and amend bills, offer arguments in favor of and opposition to each bill, and vote “yea” or “nay” on each becoming law.

By participating in the Congressional Simulation, students will receive 3 SERVICE-LEARNING HOURS.

The spring and fall Congressional Simulation are now completed.
