In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the election of the nation’s first female vice president, and a record number of women in Congress in 2021, Close Up is proud to offer Empowering Girls’ Voices. In partnership with the Hockaday Institute for Social Impact, students from schools nationwide will participate in a series of online civic engagement workshops to discuss the issues that matter most to them, develop empathy for the perspectives of others, and build the skills and confidence needed to empower a generation of female change-makers.

Empowering Girls’ Voices: Civic Leaders program is intended for middle school girls who are interested in becoming more involved in their community. Students will take part in five civic engagement workshops to build relationships, connect their experiences and personal stories to community issues, and develop the foundational skills needed for active citizenship. Participants will consider how to create a more inclusive and representative democracy, and develop plans to involve their classmates and communities in future action.
Dates: Monday, July 26 – Friday, July 30, 2021 from 1:00-4:00pm (EST) / 10:00am-1:00pm (PST) each day.

Now more than ever, young people want to play a pivotal role in developing solutions and addressing inequities in the United States. Through a series of workshops facilitated by Close Up instructors, students will network with diverse peers nationwide; deliberate about the political and structural barriers to equity in our country; and consider ways to activate members of their communities to take-action on the issues that matter most to them.
