This summer, Close Up and the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) are teaming up for the APAICS Youth Leadership Academy in Washington, DC. This week-long program is designed to provide high school students of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander heritage with leadership development, real-world citizenship skills, and opportunities to explore our nation’s capital and learn more about the issues and institutions affecting their communities.
The academy promises to be a life-changing week for students as they discuss public policy, participate in workshops and simulations, and build the skills and confidence they need to be leaders of the future.
Dates: August 14-19, 2022
Eligibility: Participants must be currently enrolled high school students for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Tuition: Tuition is $1,607 plus the cost of roundtrip airfare to Washington, DC. Tuition includes all entrance fees, hotel accommodations, meals, and programming. Participation in a Close Up program requires parent or guardian approval for any participants under 18 years of age.
Close Up is a positive experience for students…
seeing themselves as having the power to influence the democratic process.
I plan to introduce Close Up’s professional development to the teachers I work with…
and use this as a part of my school’s requirement that students take action on issues of local, national, and international importance.
I think Close Up’s virtual program is an amazing experience…
I learned that there’s a huge network of people with the same goals and drive as me…
and that our collaboration really could make a difference. It gave me hope for the future of our communities and our nation!
