Take part in Washington’s oldest and most respected citizen leadership program and earn college credit from the university founded by Thomas Jefferson himself: the University of Virginia.

Jefferson claimed that universal civic education would be necessary to insure that citizens could manage their own self-government and keep watch over their elected representatives. The Close Up program was founded 40 years ago on those Jeffersonian principles—Close Up students don’t just learn about the government, they learn how to effectively participate in shaping the policies that shape their lives. The University of Virginia recognizes Close Up’s shared Jeffersonian mission and our four decades of uncompromising quality in our curriculum by providing our students the rare opportunity to earn valuable college credit while participating in our Washington high school program.

On your trip to Washington as a student of the Democracy in Action course offered by the University of Virginia and Close Up, you won’t be separated from the friends you will meet from across the nation participating on our flagship high school program, but you will have the opportunity to enrich your learning experience through additional, post-travel study as part of earning your college credit.

Your school can come to Washington any time of the year, you can enjoy everything your classmates and fellow Close Up students will experience, all while adding something to your high school résumé that will help your college application stand out from the rest: college credit from one of the nation’s top universities.

Don’t miss this opportunity: students must enroll in the University of Virginia, Close Up Democracy in Action course prior to their arrival in Washington on a Close Up high school program.
