WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR NEW AMERICANS

Close Up’s Middle School Program for New Americans (PNA) is built on the belief that textbooks and lectures alone are not enough to help students understand responsible citizenship. The PNA program gives recently immigrated middle school students the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to become informed and active citizens of the United States. Like our other middle school programs, Close Up’s PNA program is more than just a tour of the well-known memorials and monuments of our nation’s capital. It gives students a practical understanding of U.S. history and culture by emphasizing communication, collaboration, and leadership.

Close Up’s specially-trained staff uses the nation’s capital as an awe-inspiring classroom, helping students gain a personal connection to the people, places, and events that make this country so unique. The student experience is enhanced because students live and learn among peers from schools nationwide and experience first-hand how the founding documents such as the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence apply to them. Highlights of this 5-day/4-night program include the theatre performance in DC, the Congressional simulation, and study visits to Arlington Cemetery and the National Archives!

Close Up’s Middle School Program for New Americans is open to all students in grades 6-8 who have recently immigrated to the United States and are interested in learning more about U.S. history and the foundations of American government. There is no better time than now to offer this great opportunity to your students as they become acquainted with their new country.

"I love the way the children were changed and tranformed. At the beginning, they were nervous and shy. By the end of the week, they were thrilled to make great friends in a healthy positive setting."
