WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR NEW AMERICANS

Close Up’s Program for New Americans (PNA) is built on the belief that textbooks and lectures alone are not enough to help students understand responsible citizenship. The PNA program gives recently immigrated high school students the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to become informed and active citizens of the United States. Like our other high school programs, Close Up’s PNA program is more than just a tour of the well-known memorials and monuments of our nation’s capital. It gives students a practical understanding of U.S. politics and culture by emphasizing communication, collaboration, and leadership.

Close Up’s Program for New Americans is open to all recently-immigrated high school students who are interested in learning more about current issues, government, or politics. Our hands-on, interactive approach allows all students to get involved and have a voice in issues important to them.

Close Up’s specially-trained staff uses the nation’s capital as an awe-inspiring classroom, helping students gain a personal connection to the people, places, and events that make this country so unique. The student experience is enhanced because students live and learn among peers from schools nationwide, experience first-hand how the founding documents such as the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence apply to them, and dialog with representatives from Washington’s diverse community of leaders and citizens.

Highlights of this 7-day/6-night program include Capitol Hill Day, the theatre performance in DC, the Presidential election simulation, and the farewell banquet and dance. There is no better time than now to offer this great opportunity to your students as they become acquainted with their new country.
