Mission
Close Up's mission is to inform, inspire, and empower people to exercise the rights and accept the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy.
Close Up Foundation encourages responsible participation in the democratic process through educational programs and publications in government and citizenship.
The Foundation is committed to developing new and better ways for young people, teachers, and a widening circle of citizens of all ages to gain a practical understanding of how public policy affects their lives and how individual and collective efforts affect public policy.
Close Up conducts programs to increase civic involvement, promote civic achievement, and encourage civic awareness. In Washington, across the country, and around the world; in print and on television; and in the classroom and the community, the Foundation helps strengthen the nation’s most valuable resource: its citizens.
The Foundation’s citizenship education programs are guided by the following principles:
- Democracy is a dynamic system of government that requires active and informed participation.
- The rights and responsibilities of citizenship are shared by all.
- Civic learning is for everyone.
- Civic involvement is a lifelong process.
- We learn best through direct experience.
Vision
The Close Up Foundation will be the most innovative, inclusive, multifaceted, effective, and respected organization in civic education.
Beliefs
- Informed and engaged individuals are the foundation of strong communities and a vital democracy. Community-wide participation is essential; no one should be left out.
- Ignorance, cynicism, and apathy are persistent threats to our democratic system of government.
- Gaining the knowledge and practicing the skills necessary for civic and community involvement are life-long commitments.
- One person can make a difference.
