- Chief Development Officer
Close Up Foundation, the nation’s leading civic educator, seeks an accomplished Chief Development Officer to lead the Foundation’s fund raising in support of a new, aggressive strategic plan.
Close Up, which has served more than 675,000 young people and educators with a hands-on program based in Washington, DC, intends to increase dramatically its service population over the next five years. With special emphasis on providing scholarships to young people who can’t afford to pay the fees necessary, Close Up intends to increase by 75% the number of economically disadvantaged young people it serves.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the dynamic CEO, the Chief Development Officer will lead a comprehensive fund-raising effort to ensure that students and teachers nationwide can attend programs in Washington, DC, regardless of their ability to pay.
In order to achieve the goals of the Foundation’s new Strategic Plan, the CDO will play an integral role in accessing support to build capacity and position the organization for future growth. The CEO, himself a Close Up alum, is excited about having the CDO as his partner in making this visionary plan a reality.
Qualifications: The candidate must:
(1) be a self-starter who can prospect, qualify and close; this position requires the CDO to manage and close prospects
(2) know how to invigorate the Close Up Board to increase Board generated income and support and to add new, high achieving members
(3) successfully manage the development team, currently including two full-time staff and two part-time consultants
(4) coordinate with other Foundation functions to ensure good record-keeping, reporting and stewardship
The candidate must have recent experience managing annual fund-raising operations exceeding $5,000,000. Additionally, it is expected the candidate will be committed to the importance of teaching young people how to participate in our democracy.

- Program Instructor
Curriculum - Full Time / Part Year
Responsibilities: Program Instructors are the cornerstone of Close Up. They work with students
to understand their important role as citizens in a democracy and inspire students to use their voices
to affect change. Instructors are energetic outgoing individuals who enjoy working with diverse populations
of high school and middle school students. As a Program Instructor you will use Washington, D.C., as your classroom, teaching about current public policy issues and the federal government. You will facilitate
discussions and debates between students and Washington, D.C., policy experts, help students find ways
to become more involved in their own communities, and ensure students have the best experience possible
on program. Program Instructors are also eligible to earn graduate credit through Indiana University.

Qualifications: A Program Instructor must have: a Bachelor’s degree in political science, international
relations, history, government, economics, education, or other related field; ability and interest in working
with high school and middle school students (Teaching experience is very helpful); political awareness,
knowledge, and interest in American government and current issues in both national and international affairs; leadership ability; public speaking experience; interest in and initiative to work with a variety of people in
various settings and diverse circumstances; flexibility and stamina to work long hours with a small group of
peers; energy to work in the fast-paced environment of the program.
- Account Manager
Responsibilities: The Account Manager's main goal is to maximize retention among assigned
publishing and program accounts. This is a quota position that requires the Account Manager
to use a variety of tactics to develop positive relationships with teachers and other decision-makers,
to overcome teacher objections, to differentiate the Foundation's product line from perceived
substitutes
and to collaborate with teachers and Foundation staffers to make it easier for teachers
and students to do business with us. The Account Manager also will also periodically prospect and
close new schools and teachers. Some travel is required.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in education, marketing, political science or related field from
four-year college or university; with two or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent
combination of education and experience. Must be able to work independently without a great deal
of supervision. Must posses excellent communication and organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Sales Rep
Responsibilities: The Sales Rep is the primary sales representative to a designated territory
for the
Close Up Washington high school and middle school programs. The Sales Rep collaborates
with
educators, business leaders, and others to support and expand the Close Up's presence in assigned territories.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with three to five years experience
in education, sales, marketing or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Individual must have excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational ability and interested
in inspiring young people to be active citizens. Must enjoy working with diverse constituencies, including
business leaders, educators, parents, and students. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus for the position.
