Since 1971, Close Up has provided programs that are safe, fun and known for their impact on student attitudes. Our programs are exciting for teachers and students alike, as we help them explore the inner workings of Washington, meet with elected officials, policy experts and media, and live and learn with peers from across the country. As our 650,000 alums attest, Close Up is an experience of a lifetime.
We give you an inside view of the people, processes and places in our nation’s capitol. Our students meet with key people in government, law, business and media to gain real-world insights into how DC works. They meet with members of Congress (or staff), discuss hot issues with policy experts and dialogue with journalists about how the media shapes policy. Students also experience the stunning vistas of DC’s monuments – using our unique methodology that enables them to connect history to the roles they play in our democracy today. In short, we use Washington as a living classroom to give students insights that far transcend the typical travel experience.
Our trained and motivated instructors ensure that students have positive learning experiences. Our instructors create an environment that is supportive, engaging and filled with opportunities for students to learn. And our proven teaching method promotes student-to-student learning and efficacy. A hallmark of Close Up programs is the opportunity for students to hear, share and discuss diverse point of view.
Safety is our #1 priority. We work hard to make sure students live and learn in a secure environment. We supervise students in Washington around the clock with Instructors during the day and our Residence Monitors at night. We also collaborate with teachers who bring students on program as well as with leading institutions and vendors in Washington who share our interest in promoting student safety.
High school students who complete our program can earn 1 credit from University of Virginia. For details, click

Close Up is open to all students. We believe that all students deserve the chance to learn how to participate in our democracy. Our student body reflects this belief. Close Up students come from every state and beyond and from all walks of life. Teachers and students alike say that this diversity enhances the educational and social experience.
Close Up offers great value for the price. We give you the best program -- without sacrificing safety or authenticity. Our student program in Washington is “all inclusive”– covering pretty much everything but souvenirs. Meanwhile, you’ll enjoy learning with colleagues on our parallel teachers program. And, as a valued Close Up teacher, you’re eligible to receive a fellowship plus stipends for organizing and managing your school’s Close Up program. All these things combined make Close Up a great value.
Our TAH programs inspire teachers to bring democracy "alive" for their students. Every year, teachers nationwide rely on Close Up's customized TAH programs to give them a deep appreciation of U.S. History. Best of all, teachers return to their classrooms empowered to share this appreciation with students. Our TAH programs feature a unique mix of experiential learning, peer-to-peer interaction and personal reflection. Teachers gain insights from historical sites and museums, scholars, and much more. In recognition of teachers' busy schedules, these programs move at an accelerated pace and have flexible dates. Cities include Washington; Williamsburg; New York and Philadelphia.
