Renowned programs in Washington, D.C., where students and teachers experience democracy in action

Thousands of students and teachers fundraise every year so that their schools can attend Close Up.  Here are a few tips we’ve learned from them over the years.

  • It's never too late to start. People want to support schools
  • Set team and individual goals with your students
  • Have each student create a contact list
  • Write a short script for your students to use
  • Ask students to email and call their family and friends
  • Contact local businesses; invite them to sponsor your school
  • Contact your local media; tell them about your trip and that you're looking for sponsors
  • Car Wash (sell tickets in advance to get paid “rain or shine”)
  • Coin or Donation Drive
  • Bake Sale
  • 50-50 raffle (proceeds split with the winner)
  • “Help-with-Chores” coupon books for your community
